You want to hire a dedicated development team in India, and every vendor you talk to quotes a different number. That is not because the market is opaque. It is because "dedicated team" means five different pricing models depending on who is selling it. Here is what the 2026 numbers actually look like, and which model fits which situation.
What "Hire a Dedicated Development Team in India" Actually Means
Three things get sold under this phrase, and they are not interchangeable.
Staff augmentation means a vendor places individual engineers inside your existing process. You run standups, you assign tickets, the vendor just handles payroll and compliance. Outsourcing means you hand over a scope and a deadline, and the vendor's own project manager runs delivery. A true dedicated team sits in between: a fixed group of engineers works only on your product, reports into a lead who may or may not be yours, and the arrangement is meant to last well past one project.
Wisemonk's 2026 India Talent Cost Analyst Report frames the practical difference as continuity. It puts average engineer tenure on a dedicated arrangement at 18 to 36 months, against 6 to 9 months for project-based outsourcing. If you are building a product, not shipping a one-off feature, that continuity is the entire point of paying for "dedicated" instead of "outsourced."
The Real Cost Breakdown for 2026
The same Wisemonk report lays out fully loaded annual costs for a 7-person India team: a tech lead with 10+ years of experience, two senior backend engineers, two senior frontend engineers, one senior DevOps engineer and one senior QA engineer. Total cost for that team comes to $315,000 to $410,000 a year, or roughly $26,000 to $34,000 a month, fully loaded.
The same report prices an equivalent US-based team at $1.05 million to $1.45 million a year, putting the India savings at 67 to 72 percent once salary, benefits and overhead are counted on both sides, not just base pay.
Broken down by role, the report puts a single fully loaded senior India engineer at $36,000 to $58,000 a year, and a junior engineer at $12,000 to $18,000 a year. A tech lead alone runs $58,000 to $78,000 a year, against $220,000 to $280,000 for the same seniority in the US.
Those numbers only hold if "fully loaded" actually means fully loaded. Ask any vendor quoting a monthly rate what it includes before you compare it to another quote.
Dedicated Team vs Staff Augmentation vs Outsourcing
Wisemonk's report also breaks out cost per senior engineer by engagement model: dedicated team through an Employer of Record runs $38,000 to $52,000 a year, staff augmentation runs $48,000 to $72,000, pure outsourcing runs $60,000 to $95,000, and setting up your own legal entity in India runs $36,000 to $48,000 plus separate overhead.
The entity option looks cheapest on paper, but it carries $60,000 to $120,000 a year in fixed overhead regardless of headcount, according to the same report. That makes it a bad deal for a 3-person team and a good one once you are past roughly 25 engineers, which the report cites as the rough break-even point against an EOR structure.
For most companies that want to hire a dedicated development team in India for the first time, the EOR-backed dedicated model wins on speed and risk. The report puts first-hire turnaround at 7 to 14 days and full team productivity at 90 to 120 days, well ahead of outsourcing vendors it says often take 6 to 9 months to reach full delivery.
Hidden Costs Nobody Quotes You Upfront
The number on the vendor's homepage is rarely the number on your invoice. A few line items worth asking about directly, per Wisemonk's cost analysis:
Provident Fund, gratuity and ESI contributions add roughly 15 percent on top of an engineer's in-hand salary in India. An EOR typically charges a flat per-employee fee on top of that, which the report lists at around $99 a month per engineer, or about $1,188 a year. A Contractor of Record arrangement instead takes a percentage, commonly cited at 6 percent per contractor payment.
There is also a labor-law shift to watch for. The report flags that from April 1, 2026, India's new Labour Codes require Basic Pay plus Dearness Allowance to equal at least 50 percent of total CTC, which changes how compensation packages are structured and can shift what a quoted "total cost" actually contains. If a vendor's numbers predate this, ask them to re-run it.
None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a quote that covers only base salary and one that covers what you will actually pay.
What to Check Before You Sign
Retention is the number most buyers skip, and it is the one that determines whether the savings above actually materialize. Wisemonk's report puts 12-month retention at 90 to 95 percent for teams with proper compensation bands and regular management cadence, against 70 to 75 percent without it. Losing a senior engineer at month 8 erases most of the cost advantage once you count ramp time on the replacement.
Ask three things before signing with any vendor offering to help you hire a dedicated development team in India. First, what exactly "fully loaded" includes in the quote - PF, gratuity, ESI, equipment, the EOR or CoR fee. Second, what the compensation band is relative to the 75th percentile of the local market; underpaying against that band is the single biggest driver of the lower retention figure above. Third, how much of your own engineering manager's time the arrangement assumes - the report estimates about 4 hours a week, which is easy to underbudget on your side.
The market context helps explain why this model exists at scale. NASSCOM's data, cited in a 2026 industry roundup on dedicated India teams, counts more than 1,700 Global Capability Centers now operating in the country, and IBEF puts India's software developer workforce at over 5.4 million people. That is a deep enough bench that the constraint on hiring a dedicated development team in India is rarely availability. It is whether the contract and the comp structure are set up to keep the people you hire.
If you are evaluating vendors for a long-running product rather than a single project, treat the engagement less like a purchase and more like a hiring decision you are outsourcing the logistics of. The custom software development model that works is the one where the team structure, retention plan and cost breakdown survive contact with your first year of real usage, not just the sales call.
